He grew up in an Orthodox Jewish family, though he is not religious—his father was born into a Jewish family of Lithuanian-Jewish descent, and his mother converted to Judaism. Sivan went to Carmel School, a private Modern Orthodox school, until 2009, when he began distance learning. He started taking voice lessons when he was 7.[2]

For the song, he was also nominated for an Academy Award. Sivan collaborated with British singer-songwriter Charli XCX on the single "1999" in October 2018. A follow-up collaboration, titled "2099," debuted on June 6, 2019, at the two artists' LA Pride event "Go West Fest," and was released as a promotional single from Charli XCX's album Charli on September 10, 2019. Sivan released "Take Yourself Home," his first single from his fifth EP In a Dream, on April 1. To create the visual art for his single, Sivan collaborated with freelance artists in need of work during the COVID-19 pandemic. The artists, whom Sivan met on Instagram, also designed t-shirts for the single, with all net proceeds going to the WHO COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund and Spotify's COVID-19 Music Relief Project. In February 2008, Sivan was cast as young James Howlett in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Sivan got the part after videos of his telethon performance were posted on YouTube, catching the attention of a Hollywood agent who contacted Sivan and asked him to send in an audition tape.[8] Though Kodi Smit-McPhee was already cast for this role, he was unable to be a part of the film, due to his other film, The Road. In July 2009, he auditioned successfully for the lead role in Spud, a film adaptation of the 2005 novel by South African author John van de Ruit. Filming took place in South Africa from early March to mid-April 2010. The film was released in South Africa on 3 December 2010 and was later nominated for six SAFTAs, including a Best Lead Actor in a Feature Film nomination for Sivan. Sivan appeared in the West Australian season of Samuel Beckett's absurdist play Waiting for Godot which opened on 28 May 2010. Sivan shared the role of "Boy" with Craig Hyde-Smith, alternating nights. In June 2012, Sivan returned to South Africa to film Spud 2: The Madness Continues, which was released in South Africa on 21 June 2013. Sivan also starred in the third film in the series, Spud 3: Learning to Fly, released on 28 November 2014.

Sivan appeared in the 2018 film Boy Erased, opposite Lucas Hedges, Xavier Dolan, and Nicole Kidman. In 2022, he starred as Caleb in Three Months, a coming-of-age film directed by Jared Frieder. Sivan portrays "a Florida teen who is exposed to HIV at the end of high school and finds love while he waits three months to test for the virus."[9] In 2021, Sivan was cast as a series regular in the HBO drama series The Idol, which premiered in June 2023.[10] Sivan was also a part of the ensemble cast of Trolls Band Together, which premiered in 2023. Sivan portrays Floyd, "the second youngest member of BroZone and dubbed The Sensitive One."[11]

YouTube[]

"It almost feels like my high school experience. I made my first video when I was 12 and then kept doing it until I was 18 or 19. We were maybe the second wave of YouTubers and we would all go to VidCons, traveling the world, doing meet and greets. I met all these great friends and it was a really special time. It was never a conscious decision to make the switch to music because music has been in my life since the day I was born—that felt very genuine to me. I look back at that time fondly, with maybe a bit of embarrassment, the way you’d feel looking at a picture of you when you were 15."[12]

Sivan began creating video blogs on the video sharing site YouTube in September 2012, after only singing on the site since 2007. Sivan had amassed 27,000 subscribers in the five years since joining YouTube on October 1, 2007, at the time of posting his first vlog. Sivan has over 8 million subscribers and over 2 billion total views on his YouTube videos as of December 2024. His YouTube channel once has the third most subscribers in Australia, after HowToBasic and Planet Dolan.

On YouTube, one of Sivan's most notable works is a video he created with fellow YouTuber Tyler Oakley. The video, titled "The 'Boyfriend' Tag," earned them a Teen Choice Award in the category of "Choice Web Collaboration."[13] After 2016, he stopped regular uploads and has only posted a few personal, vlog-style videos since.

Personal life[]

On August 7, 2013, Sivan came out publicly as gay in a YouTube video, three years after coming out to his family. He didn't want his sexuality to be a secret because he was just about to sign a record deal with EMI Australia and he "didn't want anyone to take that away from [him]."[27] He has a mild form of Marfan syndrome. He has also suffered from body image issues.[28]

"There was this article...and they were talking about [the lack of body diversity], and in the same sentence, this person said ‘Eat something, you stupid twinks. That really bummed me out to read that — because I’ve had my own insecurities with my body image. I think that everyone’s body is as beautiful as it is, including my own, and it just sucks to see people talking about other people’s bodies."

Relationships[]

Rumors circulated in 2014 that Sivan dated fellow YouTuber Connor Franta. They were frequently seen on each other's social medias and collaborated often. Ten years later, Franta seemingly confirmed the relationship on a podcast. He claimed to have discovered Chappell Roan in 2014 through her YouTube videos with his "boyfriend at the time."[29] They reportedly broke up around 2016 and Sivan's 2018 song, "The Good Side" is rumored to be about Franta.

Sivan dated American model and photographer Jacob Bixenman from January 2016 to early 2020.[30] They resided in Los Angeles, where Bixenman was originally from.[31] They adopted a dog, Nash, together in July 2018 and have continued to co-parent amicably after the breakup.
