Every time I see a young LGBT person commit suicide, all I can think about is the lost potential, and what could have happened if only a family member had been a little bit more supportive, or someone at school had been a little bit more supportive. That frustration, and exploring what could be when you’re young, naive and innocent, have no idea of any pressures from anyone else, versus what often ends up happening, once you realize that pressure... I wanted to explore both of those paths and tell that story, which is a very frustrating one.

On 25 July 2015, Sivan announced his fourth extended play at VidCon and on his YouTube channel. He described it as an "opening installment, a 6 song keyhole to introduce you guys to all of the music I’ve got coming in 2015".[2]

Three songs from WILD were selected to be on the standard edition of the album, while all six songs were transferred to the deluxe edition. Those who had already purchased WILD received a discount to purchase Blue Neighbourhood.
